On balance, Brown described himself as a “fiscal conservative” and a social moderate — talking about how his mother was “on welfare for a time” and what it was like “getting the blocks of cheese and worrying about how we’re going to pay the bills.”
Very funny bit in the news today — Scott Brown giving some interviews, turns out he’s pro-choice and that his mother was actually on welfare once. It took Mitch McConnell about nine seconds to apologize for him. Emphasis here is mine:
He’s gonna be an independent voice for Massachusetts. We expect that. Republicans from the northeast are not exactly like Republicans from the south or the west, we understand that. We have a big tent party. And we’re thrilled to have him.
Freaking hilarious. BTW, can’t wait for the big teabagger hoedown in Nashville this weekend. Wouldn’t it be great if they had carnival-style “Purity test” booths around the conference halls?

I think once Brown starts voting the teabaggers will eat him alive.
I wonder if Republicans will curb their “everyone on welfare’s a dead beat, con artist, parasite” hogwash when Brown is in the room. I can just imagine the way the voices will drop to whispers when he walks into the cloak room.
Any thoughts on the “Brown victory a referendum on Obama” meme? I haven’t heard one pundit mention the fact that Martha Coakley was a stupendously bad candidate. It reminds me of the Virginia gubernatorial, when 70% of voters said the President’s policies played no part in their decision and then every Republican with a voice box got on cable news and sang in croaky harmony “referendum”. Again, not a single “reporter” cried foul. Liberal bias my aunt Fanny.
I’ve got to hand it to Rep. McConnell. You have to be a world class politician to be capable of using the words “big tent” in reference to the Republican party and not burst into peels of hysterical, tear shedding laughter.
By the way I was able to enjoyed the “I have to return some video tapes” line without having it explained to me.
